We are based in the Computational Systems Chemistry sub-section of the School of Chemistry, University of Southampton. Our research involves the application of computational techniques to the study of large biological molecules found in bacteria. A key area of research is capturing the biological complexity of bacterial cell envelopes in our simulations. We are particularly interested in the role of the membranes and cell wall in the development of antimicrobial resistance. Another key area of research is the application of knowledge gained from studying biological systems to aid the design of synthetic systems for applications in bionanotechnology, such as DNA sequencing devices.
We have strong links with experimental groups in biophysics, biochemistry, chemical biology and structural biology, both in academia and industry.
